Trailblazers High Adventure Summer Camp, July 2017

Trailblazers High Adventure was the second program of the 2017 summer season, and this was the second summer for the High Adventure camp. The name High Adventure is no mistake as we cater this to older, more serious adventurers. Good thing we had a hearty crew since we had a heat wave join us for the entire week!

Schedule of the Week:

Monday - BSES Nature Trail & Concord Nature Trail

Tuesday - St. Peter's Village

Wednesday - The Great Marsh

Thursday - Brandywine Creek Canoe Trip

Friday - BSES Nature Trail

Our trip to St. Peter's Village provided a geologic playground for Trailblazers as students scrambled over the boulders of French Creek. One boulder has even been smoothed out into a natural waterslide! The afternoon was spent exploring the creek, but the morning hike sent us through the deciduous forests that surround the creek. Students were treated to Scarlet Tanager, Veery, and Wood Thrush!

Wednesday at the Great Marsh was another awesome experience! We added this trip to High Adventure so we could have more time exploring this massive campus, and good thing we did because there were lots of things to enjoy! A hike through the marsh helped us tick Wood Duck, Great Blue Heron, and Green Heron off our checklist. Also, a visit to the swimming hole helped cool things off during the week's heatwave. Finally, some of the older students were able to help with a service project of clearing spatterdock out of Marsh Creek. Grace even took home a "trophy" for her efforts!

Thursday's trip down the Brandywine Creek was a real scorcher: 100 degrees to be exact! It didn't take long for the students to end up in the water, and we had multiple dips in the creek as we meandered south on our journey. This trip is a challenge for those who are new to paddling, but I think it's safe to say that all the students were pros by the time we made it to our takeout point at Thompson's Bridge. Students worked very well together making for our most challenging yet exciting adventure to date!

All told, this week of High Adventure was another success!
